COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
The course seeks to develop the four language skills ( listening, speaking,
reading and writing) that are part of learning a language. Students will get
acquainted with some French culture and literature. Several short stories
will be read and discussed in class. We will study some grammatical points
like the passé simple, the interrogative form, the relative pronoun,
the subjunctive, the adverb, the comparisons, and the demonstrative and possessive
adjectives and pronouns. The course will be conducted in French but the difficult
points of grammar will be explained in English, if necessary.
Class time is primarily used to develop listening and speaking skills. Class
activities are in French and. Accuracy is essential in oral and written
work.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Classwork
Students have to come to class well prepared. The new vocabulary should be
memorized, the grammar studied, the written assignments written and the readings
read at least three times.
Compositions should be given back on the stipulated day. There will be a composition
every other week and the lowest grade will be dropped when the average is calculated.
Oral participation is necessary and extremely important. A grade reflecting
the student's preparation and performance will be given every day.
Absences
Attendance in class is mandatory. A maximum of 5 absences is allowed
before the final grade is lowered. Any absence will lower the weekly grade
given for oral participation and performance. Absences due to illness and/or
emergency may be excused with appropriate documentation.
Exams
At least four fifty-minute long exams will be held during the semester.
There are no make-ups. If sick, (appropriate documentation is needed),
students should call me the same day the exam is given so that an exam is
rescheduled for them.
There will be plus and minus grades. For example, B+ will correspond
to 87 to 90, B to 83 to 87, and B- to 80 to 83.
The final examination is comprehensive and will include a composition. It will
be held during exam week.
