Course Description:
This course introduces students to some basic statistical concepts and terminology. Topics include descriptive statistics, data distributions, random sampling, relationships, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. In a world full of more and more information, we are surrounded by statistics whether we know it or not (and whether we like it or not). The goal of the course is to make students more intelligent consumers of statistics. We will cover not only the computation of basic statistics, but also their interpretation and the assumptions behind them.

Participation:
Cooperative learning approach will be used in this course. The class will be divided into groups of two or three students by the second class meeting. Your group mates are there to help you and for you to help them. Ask them questions in the class. If they cannot help, then ask me. Remember that questions are my main feedback on whether students need help. Please come to my office for help if you need additional help. However, you are responsible for all material discussed in class. Please do not come to office hours to discuss material you missed because you did not attend class. I do not take attendance, but generally I am aware of those who do not attend class. Lack of attendance can have an adverse effect on your grade if your scores place you in a borderline status.

Quizzes:
There will be four open-book and open-note quizzes, of length approximately 30 minutes. The quizzes will primarily consist of problems from the homework. No makeup quizzes for whatever reason, will be allowed. However the worst quiz score of each student will not be counted so that an excused absence will not be penalized.

Tentative dates:
Quiz 1 - September 17, Friday
Quiz 2 - September 29, Wednesday
Quiz 3 - October 29, Friday
Quiz 4 - November 12, Friday

Examinations:
The exams and are closed book except for the notes you can put on both sides of one sheet of paper 8.5 X 11 in. No makeup exams for whatever reason will be allowed. The sample examinations can be found at

http://www.keycollege.com/ws/Discovery_with_Data/exams/index.html.

Exam dates:
Exam 1 - October 15, Friday
Exam 2 - December 1, Wednesday

Final Examination:
MTH111-01 : 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm Monday, December 13, 2004
MTH111-02 : 9:00 am - 11:30 am Tuesday, December 14, 2004

MTH111-04 : 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm Thursday, December 16, 2004

Readings:
This course is designed to promote exploration of concepts by having you come to class each day prepared to discuss the material for the day and to work problems. The reading assignment is in the syllabus. Try to read ahead so that you can ask questions on the text material which confuses you. The brief answers for selected in class activities can be found at
http://www.keycollege.com/ws/Discovery_with_Data/inclass_index.htm

Homework:
You cannot learn mathematics just by watching me or others during class. Mathematics is a lot like playing an instrument or sport. Becoming proficient requires practice. The homework is your opportunity to practice. Try to maintain a constant level of effort. Do some homework each day. At each class homework will be assigned, will be designated to hand in by the due date, and will be graded. Each group will turn in one assignment by each due date. Up to two late exercises will be accepted without penalty.
