This following list was drawn from ASA institutional members and other organizations for 2005 summer internship opportunities. Any organization not listed here that is interested in offering internships is encouraged to use the internship submission form at http://www.amstat.org/education/index.cfm?fuseaction=intern.

Interested students should send the appropriate materials to the locations listed below. Unless otherwise noted, the positions are available summer 2005, and the location is the city and state indicated in the address. If the application date has passed, the notice is still in place in case the position was not filled.


ACT Inc

ACT annually conducts an 8-week summer internship program for outstanding doctoral students interested in careers related to assessment. In 2005, the program will run from June 6 through July 29. The summer internship program provides interns with practical experience through completion of a project, seminars, and direct interaction with professional staff responsible for research and development of testing programs. An additional program objective is to increase representation of women and minority professionals in measurement and related fields. Applicants must be enrolled a relevant doctoral program and attending an institution within the U.S. Internships are offered in statistics and psychometrics, industrial/organizational psychology, educational and social research, and career and vocational psychology. Amgen

Amgen has multiple internship positions for PhD students who have completed work for a master's degree in biostatistics. The program consists of 10 to 12 weeks of working at our corporate headquarters. The interns will work closely with a senior-level statistician on topics related to the design and analysis of clinical trials and/or nonclinical research. Amgen research and development uses science and innovation to dramatically improve people's lives in various therapeutic areas including oncology, nephrology, and inflammation. Candidates should be proficient in SAS or S-Plus on either a UNIX or NT platform. At the conclusion of the internship program, the interns will give a presentation summarizing their work. The Division of Cancer Prevention of the National Cancer Institute offers unpaid clinical trials research training internships for outstanding statistics and biostatistics students who have strong interests in both clinical trials and methodological research. Each intern selects a research project from any of the areas of active research interest of the preceptor, and works with this preceptor towards turning the project into a paper that can be published (with the intern as a co-author). In the past, interns have worked on projects dealing with ordered categorical data, methodologies for prostate cancer screening trials, improved methods of randomization, and methods to control selection bias in randomized trials. Other research interests include endpoint selection (including the validation of surrogate endpoints) and nonparametric covariate adjustment. In some cases the intern may be able to suggest a suitable research project to work on. The hours are flexible to allow the intern to also work at a paying job, and interns enjoy the benefits of access to the world-class NIH Library, plus interns are free to attend the lectures presented by cutting edge researchers on and around the NIH Campus.

GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals with R&D sites in Philadelphia and King of Prussia is accepting applications for student co-op positions to start in June 2005, September 2005, and January 2006. Work with PhD and MS pharmaceutical industry statisticians on experimental design and data analysis projects in a variety of areas in drug discovery and development. Positions are available in nonclinical R&D and clinical pharmacology (Phase I trials). Positions are targeted for 6 to 12 months. The length of time and starting dates can be negotiable. Some knowledge of SAS preferred. Applicants must be matriculated students during the time of the student internship and be able to get academic credit for participating in our program. Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic Division of Biostatistics has summer internship opportunities for two to three undergraduate students who have completed their junior year, and two to three positions for graduate students. Internships of six to nine months are also offered based on needs and funding. Interns will work with statisticians and clinical investigators in the design and analysis of research projects originating from any number of specialty areas such as oncology (cancer clinical trials), cardiology, neurology, etc. Whether an individual applicant will be offered a position will depend on his or her qualifications, our need and funding, and the number of applicants. The Biostatistics and Research Decision Sciences Department has internships in biometrics research (preclinical biostatistics), clinical biostatistics, statistical programming, health economics, and epidemiology for students pursuing an MS or PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, economics, or epidemiology. In these internships, you will work closely with an experienced pharmaceutical industry statistician to perform statistical analysis of data from or statistical research related to basic drug research, clinical pharmacology, drug and vaccine development, health economics, or epidemiology. Statistical methodology that may be utilized includes experimental design, linear and nonlinear models, regression, survival analysis, repeated measures analysis, and Bayesian analysis. To qualify, you must have completed at least one year of graduate work, have effective communication skills, and be familiar with SAS or S-Plus. Pfizer Global Research and Development

The program will consist of up to 480 hours of work at the Pfizer Global Research and Development facilities, commencing as early as April and ending as late as December. The intern's project will be biopharmaceutically oriented, with one-on-one supervision by a senior staff statistician. The project will be a hands-on learning experience involving both statistical and related data review and data transformation programming tasks. The programming tasks will involve use of SAS on the UNIX or NT platforms. As part of the internship program, the intern will prepare a written report and a brief presentation summarizing the work and forming a permanent record of the intern's efforts.

The RAND Corporation

RAND's Graduate Student Summer Associate Program introduces outstanding graduate students to RAND, an institution that conducts research on a wide range of national security problems and domestic and international social policy issues. Summer associates typically work at RAND for a 12-week period. Students receive a stipend and are given the opportunity to conduct independent research that can be completed during the three months they are at RAND. Each associate is assigned to a research project and is mentored by a senior research staff member, usually one with the same academic background as the associate.
